成语、谚语的翻译要注意民族性。成语和谚语经常使人联想起该民族的一些特定的历史、经济、文化、风俗习惯和地理环境状况。汉英成语、谚语的对译可以使译文地道，但也给译文染上异国情调，或是与译文民族的历史、典故之类混淆不清，时常使读者感觉有点张冠李戴而让人莫明其妙。所以不能一味地追求“地道”， 给汉语的英译文添上一些盎格鲁撒克逊人的民族特色，梁山泊英雄还是不同于罗宾汉的行侠仗义，这时候还得直译，以保持汉文化 的一些民族特色。如“易如反掌”就可直译成easy as over one's hand(palm)。英译文也是形象易懂。下面的例子经英语本族人试读，都能为他们理解并接受。

“鼠目寸光”译成as short- as mice也能理解，若对应英语的see no than one’s nose也很形象。但当汉语特色很浓的成语直译成英文时，也常带有“中国味”。如何对待“中国味”是 一个争论了很久的事了。如“竭泽而渔”是译成to drain the pond in order to get all the fish，还是采用对应英文的成语to kill the goose that lays the eggs为好？现在大多学者认为有很多东西毕竟是中国所独有，很多还从来没有被英语描述过，处理这类词语也应按语言学上“名从地主(主人)”的原则。既然是中国的特有事物、观念和表达方法，就应“以我为主”，不可过分迁就西方读者，硬要换上一点“洋气”，或是一定要找一个“地道”的译法。事实上 从过去到现在我国一些看来中国味极浓的译文都被西方人所接受，并收人他们的宇典，如Long time no see之类。从英文的角度来说民俗文化汉英，西方人也乐意收集一些他们没有的表达法，何况是他们没有的观念和说法，反之亦然。“像同一个笼子里的公鸡”直译成英文 like two cocks in the same cage也是受英美读者欢迎的，有的人还 加上一句地道的英文you'll see the ,中文的含义就 是“肯定会血战到鸡毛横飞”。英译中也有很多直译，也带有很浓的“洋味”，如汉语中常引用的“罗马非一日建成”（Rome was not built in a day)，“不雨则已，下则倾盆”（It never rains but it pours.)，"鸵鸟政策”( )等，可见相互借鉴可丰富两种语言的表现力。中文在历史上也接受了很多英文的说法，如：

这些说法早成了中国人家喻户晓的词语，或许人们已经不太注意它们是“舶来品”。下面的汉语四字成语在英语中有类似说法，酷似直译，而且不太涉及民族特色或是历史典故，翻译时不妨借用，可使译文行文地道，更易于理解。
